How To Best Budget Your Finances

Introduction

Learning to budget your income is one of those things where some people have no problem, yet others cannot do it for the life of them. Those of us who find budgeting easy and satisfying don’t really understand those people who can never manage their money properly. We all know someone who is always broke, and we all know someone who although they might not be rich, always has money for the things they need.

Financial planning and budgeting are the basis of all financial success. Irrespective of whatever financial level you are operating at the principles are the same. I recently watched the Secret Millionaire program where each week a wealthy business person who has made their fortune goes undercover into a rundown area and lives amongst some of the poorest people in the country for 10. The twist is that they are only given the equivalent job seekers allowance of about £56, so they have to manage on £8 a day.

Inevitably over the week they get involved in various community and charity projects and find people that they could help financially. Well I love this program, especially at the end when the millionaire presents somebody with a cheque for an amount of money that is generally more than they have ever had in their life. I like trying to work out from their expressions if they have guessed they are a secret millionaire or not, some of them have obviously worked it out and try to put on their surprised face! Most of them are genuinely blown away though, after all it’s not every day a millionaire gives you a load of cash!

There was a couple of interesting finance related things I picked up from watching these programs though. The first was on one of the programs that featured a millionaire lady who had come from nothing into a millionaire in the period of about thirty years. She said she got started when her uncle gave her £5 when she was a teenager and she saved it. What was interesting though is that when she went undercover she still managed to save money whilst she was living off her £8 a day. She put her savings, which were only a few pounds, into a sock in her sock drawer.

The other interesting part was where a wealthy Scottish business man decided to help out a flailing cafe owner and his wife. They were foreign, Greek I think, and interestingly when they did the follow up segment of the program, when he returned to see how they were getting along, the business had still gone bust, in spite of the fact that they were helped out by the millionaire!

Can you see a pattern emerging here?

The two examples help to demonstrate the one basic fact of financial success: If you want to be financially secure you have to spend less than you have got. If you spend more than you have got you are doomed to financial failure. Both of these examples demonstrate that one basic fact.

Consider these three facts

1. Mr Macawber in David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, purports the concept of budgeting. “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pound nought and six, result misery.” Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, 1849 English novelist (1812 – 1870)

That basic rule has not changed since the 1800’s and never will!

As an SEO article writing agency we are particularly busy and are seeing our revenue increase, but that is only of value providing the expenses don’t increase above and beyond the revenue.

Spend a penny less than you get and you will always feel abundant and this is something we have now achieved. This may seem very obvious, but how often do we find we are spending more than we can afford? There are tempting offers or investment opportunities within our grasp every day and it’s difficult to resist when they try to make us believe we might never get such an opportunity again.

• Hands up if you are someone who has difficulty controlling your finances?
• Hands up if you do not know how to control your money?
• Hands up if you find it impossible to resist bargains?
• Hands up if you are in arrears?
• Hands up if you don’t know how you are going to make ends meet for the next week?

If you have all your hands in the air (and your feet!) it’s time to do something about it. (In other words take yourself in hand!!) Please excuse the pun.

The first thing you need to understand is that people who are trading are in business to make money and they want their businesses to grow. To do this they have to increase sales, so they have to make things irresistible to the customers like you and me.

So remember, the next time you are in debt and struggling to pay the bills, and you see something you want to buy, there is some big guy out there who is going to be raking in the profits as you slip further into debt. They are taking your hard earned cash and leaving you penniless so be strong and just say no to the things you don’t really need.

Change of Mindset

If your business is unlucky enough to be subject to a tax enquiry audit then you will need to make sure that the professional fees you incur as a result are covered by a tax enquiry insurance policy.

People who do not budget and find it difficult to manage their money seem to have a particular mindset. For instance, there may be an idea from childhood that being careful with money indicates to the world that a person is mean. Being reckless then equates with generosity and big heartedness. If you are loaded then spending money freely is not a problem, but if you are on a limited income or just never seem to have enough, then good financial management is essential.Move yourself into the group of people who can manage their money.

3. One of the ways to change your thinking is to ask yourself, ‘who is the best person to benefit from your hard earned money’? Is it the big companies who are making loads of profit already(Fat cats) paying their executives million pound bonuses, or would it be better if you benefitted from it?

Anxiety about your ability to manage your money and fear of figures may cause you to ignore. I had a friend who admitted this to me and when I said I enjoyed the online banking system and being in charge of moving my money around and how easy I found it; she immediately changed her mind set and decided she could handle the online banking system and researched the best way to invest her money to make more of what she had.

Give yourself permission to think that being in control of your money is a practical way to remove the stress you experience around funds. Being good with money is more often than not just about monitoring what is going on closely, so that you can respond to anything that happens that you were not expecting. By getting control over your finances will give you more energy to enjoy life more and as a result you will make more money too.
Guidelines to Liquidity

The most difficult thing to do is to face the reality. When someone is on a spending spree they are out of control and out of touch with reality. The fantasy ignores the hard fact of the cost and the very real consequences of overspending (ie. How it’s going to be repaid).

So the first thing you need to do is keep an account of everything you spend your money on. At the beginning, if you have not done this before, do not try to change what you normally do, just make a note of everything you spend as you go through the month. Have a cash note book and write down all the things you can think of that you buy. This includes household bills and food, mobile phone, TV. Put a figure in the corresponding column. If you have actual amounts put them in, if not make an estimate. Leave space for the things you don’t remember or even consider expenses. Beer, cinema, clothes even the coins you toss to street entertainers. Categorise it as fun money or entertainment funds.

Every time you take money out of your pocket/wallet/credit card/bank, write down what you use it for. Do this over four weeks, and by then you will have a fairly comprehensive list of your expenses. Make a total at the bottom of the page and on the opposite page write down all your income. When I first did this I found that one of my largest expenses was shop bought sandwiches every day! I ended up saving about £5 a day just by making my own lunches.

Compare the totals. Have you spent more or less than you receive? Is your life going towards happy or miserable? It is at this point you really need to make a shift in your thinking if you want to gain control of your finances, and move yourself into the group of people who are well off.It really is that simple.

Start by being penny pinching to people who want to sell you things. Look around for the best deals and always ask for a discount. I went on a negotiating course some years ago and the following week I put into practise what we had learnt. I reduced my spending by £350, just by asking!

Carry only a minimum amount of money on you so that you are not tempted to fritter away £20 on some impulse purchase you don’t need. Those notes add up fast and before you know it that hundred pounds that was in your pocket is gone. Have you ever noticed how when you haven’t got the cash but you know you could get it, you rarely go back for the item you were going to originally buy.

When you are a business owner or employee you can charge various expenses to the company as long as they were incurred whilst working. I tend to work long hours doing backlink building and from various locations, so it is more cost effective for me to be able to claim expenses through my business.

Cut up your credit card unless this is the most convenient way to pay regular items and you clear the balance at the end of each month. Use only one credit card, and find one that gives points for purchases. Whilst it can sometimes be an inconvenience to have to get another card out these points mount up over time and you can claim vouchers to spend in your favourite stores. Personally I don’t like loyalty cars and feel that companies who give points away ought to just provide a discount on the sale price and make everyone’s life easier, but the world is just not like that and it does pay dividends now that I have managed to get past that!

Also find a credit card that will take the full amount by direct debit every month so you don’t miss payments, accrue interest charges and generate a large fine. You know if you have some savings, and a credit card debt, you will be better off using your savings to pay the debt, that way you stop accruing more and more debt because the interest on your savings will not be in excess of the interest on your debt, it never is.

Make a list when you go shopping and only buy what is on that list. OK, some things you may have forgotten to put down but make sure you avoid the impulse purchases. Keep a list in the kitchen and only put things on it when you have run out. Use up products in the cool cupboard and freezer to reduce waste and keep spending to a minimum. There is nothing worse than buying something and then not using it and having to throw it away.

Become a prudent shopper and consumer. Try and use up coupons, saving a few saved pence per purchase can really add up. Searching through clearance sections in stores is another way to save money. You may be pleasantly surprised to see how much you can reduce your bill on your usual grocery haul.

Conclusion

Budgeting is not for the fainthearted. It means fighting the urge to buy what is not needed. It means trying to always find ways to reduce costs and trim down the fat, could you get some of your service for free or at reduced costs by renegotiating with suppliers, for example.

I run my own business and if you are like me the temptation is strong to buy all the latest gadgets. But if you can think yourself into a new mind set you will find it much easier to change the habits of a lifetime. Be sure that all expenses are accounted for when you take stock of your situation. Once you have your finances under control, there will be enough surplus to save and allow to grow for the special events you may want to treat yourself to in life.

If you still have difficulty limiting your shopping habit, take a friend or relative with you on outings. Someone you can trust to steer you away from temptation. Once you conquer your shopping demons, you will be proud of yourself for doing so and feel a great sense of accomplishment. So don’t be overwhelmed, grab that pen and paper start doing your budgets and get on track to a debt free existence and a happy life.

Converting waste into power

Right through history, recycling has existed in one form or another. Even as long ago as 400 BC signs of earlier recycling are known to have taken place. Archaeological reports show that ancient waste dumps contained fewer of what is known today as household waste, such as pots, tools and ash, which demonstrates that people were, even back then, keen to reuse materials at a time when natural resources were not so freely available.

Indeed it could be argued that the old ‘rag-and-bone’ man was just an early recycler collectingdiscarded goods on his horse and cart, before reusing or turning the collected items into something new. The 60’s TV series, Steptoe and Son, brought this very much to the public eye and greater attention.

During periods such as the World War Years, recycling and re-use were necessary as natural resources became much more difficult to come by. As well as food being rationed, certain materials such as metal and fibre were largely permitted only for use by the government in support of military operations, to meet manufacturing requirements often in the production of weaponry.

Due to rising energy costs, the need to recycle aluminium increased in the 1970’s.. As a material aluminium uses much less energy in the production process than some other materials. Also it was much sought after because of its non rusting properties. The need for aluminium saw the rise of scrap metal merchants who were willing to pay money in exchange for good quality metal. Also, in the seventies in parts of the United States of America, the first vehicles were seen to be collecting waste with a separate trailer for the collection of recyclable materials being towed behind the vehicle. This was mainly large bulky items such as bedsteads and old carpets.

To the late eighties, early nineties and as the awareness of managing the global environmental state increased amongst worldwide governments, the focus upon recycling really started to gather momentum. In the UK, the government imposed recycling targets upon Local Authorities and with the introduction of the new legislation upon the waste industry, recycling schemes really began to take off. The once commonly well known waste disposal companies, began to call themselves waste management companies and demonstrated through the offer of waste collection and recyclable material collection that waste needed to be managed more effectively. Local skip companies needed to become better at what they did.

Today, many hundreds of materials and products can be recycled, ranging from paper, card, glass and plastics, to mobile phones, electrical items, printer cartridges, textiles, clothing and concrete. The demand for different types of collection receptacles has increased dramatically.

What is Recycling?

The term recycling describes the process of reprocessing used materials into new or nearly new products to avoid the need for potentially useful materials or products to be discarded.

Recycling plays a key role in a world where climate change is high on the environmental agenda. It helps to reduce the need to unnecessarily send waste materials and products to landfill or other waste disposal options. This in turn diminishes the need or the reliance upon consuming fresh or new raw materials, reduces energy use and air and water pollution, all of which contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Recycling is probably most evident through the recycling services now provided by local authorities for domestic refuse and recycling collections and by modern waste management companies who generally offer a full range of waste and recycling collection services. Some companies, who have traditionally focused only on the collection of recyclable products, are now extending their service offering to collect general waste as well.

One of the largest UK professional in waste products management is Biffa Waste Ltd, it is easy to examine their website for more information on all aspects of waste and contaminated waste management.

In the waste sector, the common promotional activity surrounds the waste hierarchy – ‘reduce, reuse, recycle and recover’. This four R slogan is a simple message designed for a far reaching audience. Think about how you can reduce your waste. Can the waste products or materials be reused? Can the waste product or material be recycled or recovered? Many questions to consider.

The waste hierarchy is a strategy which many waste management companies and local authorities consider when developing new waste management strategies. The strategy is intended to focus the mind around preventing waste being produced in the first place. Consider the options for reuse and recycling but ultimately minimise the amount of waste produced at the end of the cycle.

So the emphasis is very much on the entire production process. The waste hierarchy extends much wider than to waste management companies and local authorities. Working groups have been set up to bring many sectors together to consider the entire waste cycle. For example, the manufacturer of a product needs to consider how the product is to be manufactured. Can parts be used which can later be recycled or reused? Can the amount of packaging which surrounds the product be reduced? When the product reaches the retailer, is it necessary for the product to be placed within an outer package? Once the retailer sells the product, what will the consumer do with the unwanted elements of the purchase, i.e. the packaging? How will the packaging be collected and where will it go? Will it return to a recycling plant, for onward transfer to a reprocessing plant, where the cycle begins all over again?

How are Materials Collected for Recycling?

Legislation now dictates that all waste should be treated to avoid the amount of recyclables and unnecessary waste going direct to landfill. Since 1996, UK government has applied a landfill tax on all waste disposed of within landfill. The rate of tax has increased considerably in recent years rising from the original level of £8 per ton, to today’s rate of £40 per ton. The UK government has previously announced that this will increase further to £48 per ton by the end of 2010/11. This rate applies to all general waste streams, although there is a lower rate for inert materials. Sending waste directly to landfill is an expensive option and finding suitable methods to divert waste away from landfill is now a priority.

So, the message to everyone is clear, sort your waste to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. Traditionally, at home or at work, as soon as you place waste in the container , it is forgotten about. Someone else will collect it and take it away. Nowadays, at home and at work, recycling is being encouraged through the provision of containers in which to place specific recyclable materials. At home, the children are often the keen recyclers.

Perhaps the most common materials to be seen being collected for recycling are paper, card, glass, metals and plastics. But the opportunity to recycle a vast number of materials or products continues to grow.

Many schools propose paper recycling incentives because it is a material that pupils take for granted, but can simply learn to recycle.

The methods of collecting materials or waste to be recycled is also increasing and becoming more noticeable within local communities. Dedicated collection sites, often referred to as a bring bank sites, are springing up in supermarket car parks to encourage customers of the supermarket to return such items as bottles, newspapers or cardboard to the bins on their way into the supermarket. Shoppers are therefore encouraged to bring back their recyclables.

Local Authority waste collection crews or their appointed contractors will collect refuse and recyclables from the kerbside usually at the front of your home. Collection from domestic premises generally remains the responsibility of the local council and many have now employed the provision of boxes in which to collect specified recyclable materials or products. The services do vary from council to council.

In the industrial and commercial sector, waste management contractors offer separate containers in which the customer deposits the appropriate waste stream or recyclable material ready for collection. The containers will often be clearly labeled as to which recyclable product should be placed within that container or bin. Alternatively, the bins will be colour coded to identify which recyclable wastes should be placed within which bins.

The key to a successful recycling initiative is homeowners about what can be recycled and how. In the commercial world getting the co-operation of office employees is crucial. The introduction of any recycling scheme must ensure that in asking staff to separate waste for recycling, it does not become time consuming and affect the efficiency of what employees should be doing in their work.

The Recycling Process

Various collection systems exist for the collection of the recyclable products . Whichever collection system is employed , the materials are taken to a recycling centre where they will be segregated from other wastes.

To begin the recycling process from a collection point of view, the more recyclable material which can be separated at source, i.e. at home or in the work place, the more efficient it will be for the waste collector. That is why separate containers are supplied to the waste producer to encourage segregation at source. If card can be collected on a vehicle, which will collect no other waste material, the card will be kept uncontaminated and therefore will have a higher value when it reaches the processing plant. Similarly, dedicated glass collection vehicles are used to collect only glass. Apart from the obvious health and safety reasons and the weight of collected glass, it will have a much higher value if the collected glass load is not mixed with other waste.

Once collected, the recyclable materials can be taken direct to a reprocessing plant, if the load contains only that particular type of material. So a dedicated glass collection vehicle could take the load directly to a glass processing plant. It is more likely that the glass will have to be bulked up for onward shipment to the processor.

If mixed recyclables have been collected such as paper and card within the same container, it may be necessary for the collector to take the load to a materials recycling facility to unload and allow the load to be sorted into separate paper and card bundles for onward transport to a paper or card processing plant. Whichever method is used, the recyclable material collected will usually be segregated or cleaned before going through to a reprocessing plant to be converted to a new resource and ultimately used as a new product or in manufacturing. Inert materials can be a useful by product at landfill, for example shredded tyres to aid traction on access roads.

There is a charity programme now in place where food waste from supermarkets which would expect to usually be thrown away, is collected and redistributed to the struggling and disadvantaged members of the community.

The Increasing Importance of Recycling

In the UK around 35% of waste collected from households is recycled or composted. Whilst in the commercial and industrial sector, the volume of waste sent to landfill has declined substantially in recent years and the volume of waste now being diverted for recycling or reuse by this sector has risen above the volumes going to landfill. But there is still much to be done to increase rates further in this sector.

Landfill continues to play an important role in the management of waste across the UK as not all wastes can be recycled and some are more suited to landfill disposal than by any other means. However, it’s not just the increasing costs of disposing of waste directly in landfill which is making recycling a more appealing option for businesses. Landfill is becoming scarce, with some experts suggesting that the amount of void available across all UK landfill sites, has less than ten years existence remaining before all sites are deemed to be full.

In recent years, waste management companies have had to change their focus, and start to consider and invest in new technologies, such as energy from waste plants, anaerobic digestion plants and mechanical biological treatment plants, as alternatives to landfill. Local Authorities have also adapted their attitudes by undertaking comprehensive strategic reviews as to how waste under their jurisdiction should be handled. In some cases this has meant that unitary authorities are implementing plans to introduce long term contracts, usually around 25 years in length, through which to manage their entire waste management requirements. These contracts will often include the need to build a facility through which to handle all waste generated across the county by sorting all waste streams. The contracts may also include the collection of all waste and recyclables from households across the area. So the issue of waste management is changing rapidly. The days of just throw it in the dustbin have disappeared and the advent of new technologies are upon us.

Conclusion

Recycling is now a way of life and is here to stay. It has evolved over the years from something that was undertaken without any real thought behind it. The trusty rag and bone man was just trying to make a living. Today, many blue chip organisations are setting out plans for a ‘zero to landfill’ waste policy, where the intention is very clear – reduce waste, reuse waste and recycle waste, but no waste must end up in landfill.

Many homes across the country now have some form of container in which to separate waste for recycling. The need to separate newspapers, aluminium cans and plastic bottles are almost common place. Whilst in industrial and commercial sectors, there is an increasing list of items to consider for recycling such as printer cartridges, office paper, metal and electrical equipment. Even on street corners and airports you see bins to recycle such items as newspapers and drink cans.

Ideally the whole process would be a complete cycle such as it was in the days of the horse. However the advent of new technologies will accelerate further the way in which our waste is to be managed in the future, but it is highly unlikely that we will ever reach the ultimate waste free society.

Interest Rate Predictions for This Week

Home loan mortgage rates jumped the most that we’ve seen since last December. It was a rough week dominated by the Federal Reserve and some hotter-than-expected inflation data.

We saw the FOMC minutes move the market mid-week as the Fed expressed continued economic optimism. Separately, they made a surprise change to the discount rate increasing it to 0.75% from 0.50%

Interest Rate Forecasts for This Week

If last week wasn’t enough for you, Fed Chairman Bernanke is back before Congress Wednesday and Thursday of this week. We will also see another whopping set of Treasury auctions of almost $120B. On top of all of this, the news calendar is loaded with reports all week. The big news includes:

  • Tuesday : Case-Shiller Home Price Index, Consumer Confidence
  • Wednesday : New Home Sales
  • Thursday: FHFA Home Price Index, Initial Jobless Claims
  • Friday: Existing Home Sales, Personal Consumption Expenditures

Mortgage rates are at a crossroads where they might tick ever so slightly lower, but they’ll eventually move much higher. In order to get the best rate on your home loan approval, it is best to start soon.

There is very little to suggest that rates are going lower and there is a lot to suggest that rates are going higher. When they do, it is very unlikely that we’ll see rates this low again anytime soon.

The economy is definitely improving and there is no need for the Fed to continue to spend so much money to keep rates this low.

If you want to check back on this week’s mortgage rate predictions, it should be an interesting week.  Expect changes to Chicago mortgage rates with a significantly better chance of higher rates rather than lower rates.

Gas Furnace Prices – How To Get The Best Value-For-Money

Posted on : 24-02-2010 | By : Chris | In : Uncategorized

With the colder weather now drawing near, many people will be looking to replace their gas furnace with an improved, more efficient model. Gas furnace prices are an important factor in achieving a cost-effective solution to your heating requirements.

Make certain that you do not make the mistake that many people make and that is to select your new gas furnace solely on the basis of which one is the cheapest. This may be an expensive mistake over the long-term.

You need to buy a furnace that is sufficient for your heating needs and is not ‘over-specified’. Given that future gas prices are very likely to be higher than they are today, you should look at buying a high-efficiency furnace. Although this will cost you more initially than a low-efficiency furnace, the long-term savings on gas should more than offset the difference in price.

You will also need to consider the costs of routine maintenance and servicing as well as the guarantees and warranties that the furnace manufacture will supply with your new furnace. The availability of spare parts and how quickly these can be obtained and fitted also need to be considered to ensure that your heating is never out-of-action.

The current economic climate means that gas furnace manufactuers and dealers are desperate for your business. This means that there are some real bargains to be obtained if you shop around for the best gas furnace prices.

A new gas furnace is a major purchase so you should take plenty of time to ensure that you get the best combination of price, performance and economy that you can.

How to Tell the Key of a Song

Posted on : 24-02-2010 | By : Chris | In : Uncategorized

0

Every piece of music is written in one key or another, such as the key of Bb or the key of E or whatever. The key signature at the beginning of a score tells what sharps or flats are being used in the song, and therefore what scale the song is based on.

There is a key signature in all pieces of music.  It is signified just after the clef (the staff) and includes symbols for flats (b) and sharps (#).  When you take a careful look at the start of each of the lines in the music you will surely recognize a grouping of flats or sharps (never both at once).  They appear either on a space or on a line of the music staff and are put there to signify the notes that will be affected by them.  To say it a different way, if the #, or sharp, is placed on the top of a music staff, the F note will be played as F#.  This means that anytime the note F is played, no matter if it is in the staff’s first space, on top of the staff, or below or above the staff (this will be signified by the ledger lines) it will be played as F#.

If the music requires that the note be played in a different way, not as a flat or sharp as indicated in the key signature, there will be an accidental just in front of the note to indicate it being played as a natural note.  An example of this would be if the piece has been indicated to play all F notes as sharp but in one section it is needed played as a natural, the accidental will be placed just before the note that is different.

The main purpose of the key signature is to limit the number of flats or sharps noted in the music. In other words, rather than placing a # by the note F every time it occurs in the music, it’s much easier to indicate to the musician that all Fs are to be played as F#s. Without key signatures, written music would be cluttered with sharps and flats making it very difficult to read.

Here are some common key signatures and the notes they affect:

Key of C: No flats or sharps
Key of G: One designated sharp (F#)
Key of D: Two designated sharps (C# and F#)
Key of A: Three designated sharps (C#, G# and F#)
Key of E: Four designated sharps (D#, F#, C# and G#)
Key of F: One designated flat (Bb)
Key of Bb: Two designated flats (Eb and Bb)
Key of Eb: Three designated flats (Ab, Bb, and Eb)

Each key also has it’s own relative minor. Though a major and its relative minor are similar in almost every way (their scales are the same though started in different places), they are thought of separately. A relative minor is named by the note that is a minor third down from the major (key). Another way to think of it is the relative minor is named by the sixth note in the major scale. For example, the note A is the six note of a C major scale, so an A minor is the relative minor to C. The use of a particular key’s relative minor is very common in music and knowing them goes a long way in understanding a song’s chord progression.

Below are some of the keys and their relative minors (keys):

The relative minor for C is A minor
The relative minor for D is B minor
The relative minor for A is F# minor
The relative minor for Bb is G minor

When a musician is experienced and plays his music in a nontraditional setting, like when they play free style with not music to read, all he really needs to know is the key that the music was written in and he will be able to play the scales or melodies and the necessary chords that will allow them to play the song freestyle.

Finally, it is not unusual for a song to be written in more than one key – to change somewhere in the middle of a song. Such key changes can be a challenge for relatively new musicians.
