The flexibility and durability of tubing built of high density polyethylene material and connected by PEX fittings provides many advantages over plumbing arrangements utilising metal or rigid plastic pipes. PEX pipes do not corrode and withstand cold temps without becoming brittle. They cost less than metal or pvc piping. They are much easier to put in because they are stored in reels and need fewer fittings.

In cold temperatures PEX tubes retain their flexibility and do not become brittle and crack. Unlike metal pipes, PEX tubing will not corrode and will not acquire scale. PEX tubing is energy cost-effective as well because they will not conduct heat.

PEX tubing is wrapped in reels. Because reels weigh less than cut metal or plastic pipes, they are easier to store and cost less to ship. Tubing can be unwound from the reels with no demand for coupling fittings. Installing is much quicker and less expensive when it does not involve the installation of pipe.

There are a number of joining methods some of which are patented. But basically the fitting is placed either over or into the tube and a ring is crimped on to the tube or fittings. Rings can be built of plastic, copper or stainless steel. There are proprietary joining systems which require specific tools and fittings.

The tools you will use when installing PEX are a PEX pipe cutter, a main crimping tool and a de-crimping tool. The PEX pipe cutter comes in different sizes for 1/2″ and 3/4″ size tubes. Rings are crimped utilising the crimping tool. The de-crimping tool is employed for removing rings from tubes or fittings.

The most familiar material used to make fittings for PEX plumbing is brass. However, you can find fittings constructed from other metals and even plastic. Fittings have ridges that when pinched make a high-pressure seal.

Utilising the system of PEX fittings along with PEX tubing has definite advantages over metal and plastic piping. It is less pricy than rigid plastic and copper piping . It can be put in right from the spools. It involves less fittings. It last longer due to it is not subject to erosion.
